Understand
Las Vegas can describe itself as a strange mirage or a dream in which elements do not need to be linked rationally, coherently and consistently to harmonize. For example, a hotel claiming the style of a medieval European castle, while even a slightly unsophisticated eye will doubt its conformity with the standards of the architecture of that period. Some pre-conceived ideas need to be set aside to appreciate the place. This city obeys its own aesthetic criteria. This gives a rather theatrical or cinematic layout, especially on Las Vegas Boulevard. You have to give up on being in the heart of a surreal oasis lost in the desert.
This city is young (founded in 1905, then incorporated officially in 1911) and seems to be looking for its own identity. It is noted that there are many construction sites: the city is growing! It already has about 2,000,000 inhabitants in its metropolitan area, of which just over 600,000 are in the city itself. Las Vegas' economy is largely supported by the 34 million tourists it attracts every year. The industry of cinema, entertainment (casinos, shows and others), marriage, hotel and catering generate a lot of money.
Values of the right and the left sometimes contradict each other. For example, how can we explain the existence of an economic and racial divide in a place that promotes human rights through democracy and capitalism? It shows people trying to raise awareness of the dangers of alcoholism and other vices as people walk the streets, from casino to casino, drinking alcoholic beverages. At the same time, we can't miss the spread of adult services that invade the Strip. You are very tolerant to alcohol (available 24 h/24) as well as to cigarette (possibility of smoking almost everywhere), but absolutely not to so-called recreational drugs (even mild). Vices are allowed, but only to some extent. Understanding it is essential to avoid trouble. The multiple cameras and other means aimed at the safety of visitors add to a certain permissiveness regarding morals and freedom of expression.
History
Aboriginal Presence (800-1050)
They formed a highly evolved society that was engaged in the cultivation of squash, fêves, mah and hunting. The latter benefited from sophisticated tools such as bows, arrows, woven baskets and tents. Some historians speculate that the region was abandoned when the drought set in. A semi-nomadic lifestyle was required.
Discovery of the site by Spanish missionaries (1773)
The Franciscans discovered the place and its inhabitants during Catholic missions between California and New Mexico. They undertook to convert them.
Mormons arrive (1855)
This period is characterized by mining, particularly silver and gold. The harsh living conditions, the arid climate and the conflicts with the miners led Mormons to flee relatively quickly.
Birth of Las Vegas (1905)
You will notice the presence of ranches and the construction of the first infrastructure. The population benefits from electricity (1915), running water (1915), train (1905) and shops. Relatively gloomy little lounges present French-cancan-style shows to entertain customers with shaved pains. Hoover Dam was built in the 1930s, which greatly contributed to the city's rise and the quality of life of its inhabitants. The city is tolerant of alcohol and prostitution. Prohibition greatly promotes organized crime, which is enriched by alcohol smuggling. The 1929 stock market crash ruined many fortunes and helped to end the prohibition introduced in 1920. The game, which was abolished in 1909, was legalized in 1931 by the State of Nevada and the arrival of the casinos was seen. This is the beginning of the Sin City. The Strip's first resort, El Rancho Vegas, opened in 1941. Las Vegas was then a harsh bled of the far west living practically in anarchy.
The "Sin City" (1946-1966)
The mafioso see in Las Vegas beautiful business opportunities. Bugsy Siegel is the source of a very innovative project for the time, but it will cost him much more than money; The Flamingo Hotel and Resort opened in 1946. Later, the millionaire Moe Dalitz opened several Hotels-Casinos on the Strip during the '50s and '60s. It's the money of vice and organized crime that carves the foundations of the current Las Vegas. This is the time when close ties between Las Vegas and Hollywood emerged. The biggest stars come to Vegas to perform or have fun there. People like Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra (The Rat Pack) and Elvis Presley are seen parading. This is the time of glamor and ambient anarchy. McCarran Airport came into service in 1948, making the city much more accessible.
Tourism Boom (1966-1989)
Billionaire Howard Hughes moved to Las Vegas in 1966 and invested in real estate. This has had the effect of attracting other entrepreneurs with incomes from sound and legitimate sources. This comes at a point when Sin City must now compete with Atlantic City (New Jersey), which legalized the game in 1976 and then acquired several casinos. Las Vegas responds by building new casinos that are more flashy than ever. This is a success! The number of visitors continues to increase, prompting more and more people to settle there. We need labor and service staff!
Las Vegas of the major hotels-casinos (1989-ajd.)
In short, money attracts people and people attract money. This is evident in the numerous thematic casinos, each more excessive, eccentric and extravagant. Everything is done to attract people and generate money through an image of splendor and luxury. In this grandiose idea, casino-hotels host large-scale shows in rooms built only according to the needs of the production that is presented. What is presented here is unique in the world. There was a real demographic and real-estate boom until the market's recent setbacks (2007-2008). However, Las Vegas can quickly adjust. Luxury residences with more affordable prices than they originally were seem a great way to attract new, wealthy residents. Tourists continue to flow and Las Vegas is still a city in full expansion!
Go
By plane
- 1 McCarran International Airport of Las Vegas (AITA code: LAS ・ ICAO Code: (KLAS)) 5757 Wayne Newton Boulevard, Las Vegas, NV 89119,
+1 702-261-5211
As soon as the plane exits, slot machines welcome passengers. Fly over Las Vegas at sunset or at night promises an impressive sight. Taxis await tourists at the exit of the airport (McCarran International Airport). Buses shuttle between airports and various hotels on the Strip or Down Town Area. Apparel cars are also offered by some car rental companies, for those who can afford it. You can still find affordable rental cars.
By Car
Las Vegas is accessible by road. The most common tracks are Interstate 15 and US Highway 95.
By train
Unfortunately, the Amtrak company has interrupted service since 1997. You must now disembark at Needles (California) station and take the bus to Las Vegas. You will be dropped off at McCarran Airport.
Circulate
By taxi
Hailing a taxi on the street is not at all efficient...especially on Las Vegas Boulevard. It is preferable to arrive at the main entrance of a large hotel on the Strip, as the available drivers are there. However, sometimes you have to wait in line. Some moments are very busy.
By Car
Car rental companies are located at the airport. It is possible to find a car there at an affordable price. In addition, Las Vegas offers quality roads, affordable gasoline and lots of free parking (but very busy). Traffic is very heavy 24 hours a day on the Strip and can therefore be an irritant against time. Parking can be a problem when visiting The Strip and Down Town Area. It is, however, an almost ideal city for motorists.
By bus
Two-story buses shuttle back and forth on the Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard), from the south of the boulevard to the city center (Down Town Area). The stops are clearly indicated and often commented for tourists by the one that drives the bus. Some will even generously share some stories and life slices with passengers to animate the trip. The prices are very affordable: 5 $ us for a valid pass 24 h (September 2006). It should be noted that the bus network outside the Strip differs from the one running along the famous boulevard. Tickets are payable to the driver; bring the exact currency.
Monorail
Lines serving hotels:
- Mandalay Bay - Luxor - Excalibur (free)
- Monte Carlo - Bellagio (free)
- Mirage - Treasure Island (free)
- MGM Grand - Bally's and Paris Las Vegas - Flamingo and Caesars Palace - Harrah's and Imperial Palace - LV Convention Center - LV Hilton - Sahara ($5 us/ticket or 15 $ us/pass for the day, fall 20 06)
On foot
Las Vegas is not a pedestrian-friendly city. This is, however, the best way to visit The Strip and Down Town Area. There are sidewalks on many streets and gangways that allow you to safely cross the busiest corners of the Strip. Walking outside the Strip or Down Town Area is a marginal practice. You have to be careful not to find yourself on one of the industrial arteries... they often have several lanes and offer very little time to cross the intersections. Moreover, the warm desert sun is overwhelming almost all year round.

Getting married
The steps to get married in Nevada are simple and not very demanding. All you need to do is:
1- Report to the licensing office with $55 us (2005) and one proof of identity (passport or birth certificate) that you are 18 years of age or older for official authorization. It is not advisable to do this on the day of the wedding, as the wait can sometimes be very long. The most popular moments are Valentine's Day and New Year's Day. The office is open Monday to Thursday, from 8 am to midnight or 24 am/24 on public holidays.
Clark County Marriage License Bureau, 200 South Third St., (702)455-4416 or (702)455-4415, www.co.clark.nv.us
2- Come to one of the many chapels or other places that are suitable for exchanging your wishes. It is preferable to book in advance. Some rooms are open 24 hours a day. Several hotels have a chapel. The ceremony can be held by a minister of worship (priest, pastor) or a justice officer. Different combinations are possible as a package: ceremony only or ceremony + reception or preparation (costume/accessories rental, hairdresser, makeup, etc) + ceremony + reception
3- Depending on your tastes!
Celebrating your love in Las Vegas can cost $100 to millions. The main limits are the imagination and the money you have. A multitude of packages are available on the internet. Note: It seems that the steps to promote this marriage in France are quite complex and, above all, long

Comps: You intend to bet at least $1,000? Ask for free comps. These are various treats: show tickets, plane tickets for Las Vegas, free stays, free meals, etc. We try to encourage you to come back and spend money. This is only available to high rollers. For the others, you are served complimentary refreshments... finally, almost free: the staff that offers it expects to receive 1 $ tips for each drink.
The Locals: The locals are casinos for people living in and around Las Vegas. They have the advantage of being cheaper and more tolerant with children under the age of 21. Less flashy and sparkling but deliciously kitsch, they all have restaurants that allow you to eat at very low prices (between $5 and $10 maximum if you are very hungry). Although children under 21 are not allowed to play, they are tolerated in the restaurant area as well as to watch as long as they do not linger too long. Avoid too young children, under the age of 16 (see 17). Ideal for realizing the hidden side of the American dream or eating a piece without breaking the bank.
For Children and under 21 years old: Although Las Vegas has little interest for children under the age of 21, there are daycare centers and games areas for children in most casino hotels. No gambling is allowed here, but you will find arcade games, fishing with linen and other games, entirely dedicated to the youngest, even for the older ones who have not reached their majority (21 years). There are also numerous rides and big eight. Some are for the youngest and others are for the oldest. Some even go around the hotel (in New York New York for example).
Drink a glass
The alcohol available 24 hours and the large number of visitors contribute to the existence of a night life rich in many ways. So there is something for everyone. Several establishments require a cover charge.
Looking for a relaxed and unpretentious place? You'll find it easy.
Do you want to pop up in a trendy place worthy of stars? Remember this:
1- Dress up chic and preferably in black. Forget jeans!
2- Be patient, for you are not alone in wanting to go to this unusual place. VIPs have priority over others and it is therefore normal to be outdone by them in the queue. The wait can sometimes be very long (up to 2-3 h at times), especially at the end of the evening. It is therefore preferable to arrive before 10 pm.
3- Please note that only people who match the profile sought by the institution are admitted, even after a long and painful wait. The doorman judges you based on your appearance and attitude before determining whether you enter or not.
4- Expect to spend a lot of money. Prices are based on the type of clientele the place is looking for.
5- Good news! There are VIP Packages packages. These packages give you priority access to the club (VIP) and some other privileges such as free drinks and a reserved area. Ideal for partying with friends. Normally, you keep your reserved space while you buy alcohol. There are also Front-of-the-Line Passes that allow you to pass first in the queue, but without the other extras. Some brokers offer trendy club tours (circuit party).

Eat
Some consider Las Vegas to be the best-equipped city in the United States in terms of catering services. This reputation remains relative. Many restaurants are open 24 hours a day. Las Vegas is famous for its buffets.
Buffets
The best places are usually not the most affordable. Most hotels offer a buffet for a fee.
Cheap
Less than $10 us in the evening, very few choices, low quality (very few healthy foods available, less sought-after dishes), strong promiscuity.
Average Price
Prices vary according to time and specialties (10-25 $us and more, in the evening), several dishes available (from fast food to healthy dishes), good quality (good choice of meat and seafood, vegetarian dishes, various desserts, several fruits and vegetables), pleasant atmosphere. It's good to find out which kitchens are honored and when of the week. There are sometimes evening meals that are oriented towards seafood or steaks or ethnic cuisine in particular. The price varies depending on the time of day: breakfast, lunch or dinner.
- Paradise Buffet- Charming and affordable buffet under the theme of tropical forest. The dishes correspond to what you would expect from a casino-hotel buffet in Las Vegas; variety and quality are at the RDV. The menu changes depending on the day of the week and the meal. Stay
Las Vegas hotels are among those offering the best prices in the United States, on an equal basis. Those at the Down Town Area are generally more affordable than those on Las Vegas boulevard (The Strip). The Strip Area is home to the major theme hotels/casinos, while Down Town Area is the heart of old Las Vegas and therefore the oldest hotels/casinos. The Strip's hotels are cheaper on weekdays than on weekends. Some establishments refuse to accommodate minors (under 21 years). Almost all the establishments offer one or more restaurants as well as air conditioning. Many have a swimming pool.
Those who swear only by luxury will not be left out with all sorts of accommodation possibilities reserved for the wealthy. Las Vegas knows how to take care of those for whom money is not a problem.
It is still possible to find superior quality accommodation without going bankrupt. The majority of themed hotels are relatively accessible.
For the smallest budgets, you can count on camping (especially for those with a mobile/caravan house) or motels bordering the main tourist points. However, you may find yourself in a neighborhood that is not very recommendable.

Security
Multiple cameras and other surveillance systems make Las Vegas safer than the average American city.
However, you should be careful of pickpockets when you find yourself in particularly busy and entertaining places. Be vigilant... Las Vegas has much more than it takes to entertain you, and thieves have plenty of imagination to empty the pockets of tourists. Avoid wearing overly ostentatious accessories or jewelry so that you have a more modest look will probably avoid trouble. Some hotels offer a safety deposit box service.
Beware of people who approach you directly on the street to sell you things: fashion accessories, electronics, entertainment packages, etc. You could buy... air! It can also be a pick-pocket trick designed simply to distract you while you are being robbed. In the best case, you will have paid a much more expensive item than it actually is. Don't waste your time and continue your journey. The ideal is to simply ignore them.
It is also good to know that only games of chance offered in licensed places (e.g. casinos, some mini-markets, airport) are legal. Those offered on the street by itinerant crowd facilitators are scams.
As everywhere else, it is always preferable to keep an eye on your drink and purse/purse if you go out in a bar or club. There are several tricks available to abuse partygoers. It is therefore preferable to moderate alcohol consumption.
Some taxi drivers scam travelers from the airport to the hotel. It is good to inform yourself in advance of the price of the race at the place provided for the stay. It may also be recommended that you make a map of the city in advance to indicate the journey to the driver. It is important to take the high level of traffic in Las Vegas Boulevard (The Strip) into account in your itinerary.
It is strongly suggested that you get some information about the road code if you want to drive. Remember that Las Vegas Boulevard is an area of traffic congestion and accidents. In addition, some thieves target drivers. Some stop while others hit the victim's vehicle with their car and wait for her out to act. So stay in the car and continue your road if that happens to you.
If you win a large prize, do not hesitate to use certain security services. Casinos offer almost all of them. You can claim your winnings as a check and ask to be accompanied to your car, room or other place. Keep in mind that your luck can be jealous and attract thieves.
Some places should be avoided. The area between The Stratosphere hotel and the Downtown Area is not recommended at night, especially on the west side of Las Vegas Boulevard. The area north of Fremont Street, particularly east of Maryland Parkway, is no safer.
Health
Health care in the United States is mostly private enterprise and is delivered at very high prices. It is better to have good insurance covering all of this type of care abroad. It is essential to ensure that it covers: hospitalization, doctors' fees, medicines, treatments, medical examinations, nursing, repatriation, etc. It is recommended to pay attention to them as soon as possible after booking the trip and not to forget to bring proof of insurance with you. Some health facilities require full payment of care upon discharge from hospital.
There are a few items to bring in your luggage: a good sunscreen, after sun lotion, sunglasses with anti-UV protection, a light headboard (summer hat, cap or headscarf) and a nasal spray (saline water). The air is very dry and the sun is plunging. It is always good to bring some warm clothes (long-sleeved pants and sweaters), as the temperature can be cooler in the late evening or in the morning. In addition, some casinos tend to keep the air conditioning very strong: it is therefore sometimes very cold compared to the outside temperature. Running or walking shoes are essential for nature trips and exploring the city.
If you wish to explore the wild desert, a few security measures apply:
1- Inquire about weather forecasts at the national park or the weather report on television or radio.
2- Tell someone where you are going (especially if you leave without a guide).
3- Plan 4 liters of water per person per day. Dehydration should be avoided.
4- Apply a good sunscreen on each part of the body that would be exposed.
5- Dress properly to protect yourself from the effects of the sun and heat. A light headboard and closed shoes are essential.
6- Beware of poisonous animals such as snakes and scorpions. In case of a bite, seek medical help immediately. Plan a way to contact emergency responders, especially if you are leaving without a guide.
Respect
People living in the south of the United States have a vision of life and values that may be different from those found elsewhere. Individualism, independence and autonomy are highly valued. This highlights social aspects that may seem shocking, cruel or unfair to some. It can be misunderstood and frustrating to make social criticism of certain things that happen there. They are generally proud of their capitalist way of life, so it is better not to question it. Criticism of institutions such as the US criminal system/police, the US military, or Christianity is also highly imperfect. Racism is a particularly taboo topic. It is better to avoid socio-political topics during a conversation. Sometimes confrontations can be useless...
Freedom of morality should not be confused with anarchy. Some behavior is not tolerated and can lead to heavy prison sentences and/or fines and a ban on foreign citizens staying in the US. It is therefore not recommended:
1- Have drug-related activities (consumption, possession, sale, trafficking, conspiracy to...). Laws are particularly tough on this type of crime. The US is waging a war on drugs and everything around it. Dealers and users are judged by a large majority of Americans to be profoundly devoid of morality and discernment.
2- Have activities related to prostitution (sexual favors in exchange for money)... only the services of exotic dancers, accompaniment services, strip clubs, sex shops and the regular porn industry are tolerated according to certain standards. Prostitution is legal in some rural counties of Nevada only and has to comply with relatively strict regulations. The county in which Las Vegas is located (Clark County) criminalizes prostitution and actively fights against it.
3- Being and/or working illegally in the United States. U.S. laws provide for a limit on the length of a tourist stay as well as certain procedures for obtaining appropriate Visas and the Green Card/work permit. Those who immigrate illegally to the United States are badly perceived, especially in the south of the country. As a result, they are particularly excluded, marginalized, and socially isolated. Their illegal status makes them extremely vulnerable to abuse and exploitation in all its forms. Several repressive means are working to counter illegal immigration. There is a rise in intolerance among American citizens.
4- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drug(s). The reasons are obvious.. This is one of the most common causes of accidents in Las Vegas, especially on The Strip. There are strict laws on driving alcohol. It is also worth noting that medical personnel rarely hesitate to report illicit drug use/possession, with evidence, to police authorities. Heavy medical and legal costs may add to your troubles.
5- Buy and/or consume alcohol and bet when under 21 years of age, age of majority. Minors who are caught risk the correctional/correctional facility. Adults with minors must be responsible and ensure that they are properly conducted. Casinos are very intolerant and vigilant in the face of this kind of crime, because it endangers the existence of their business. The license to operate such a facility is conditional on compliance with certain laws.
Communicate
INTERNET:
Several hotels offer internet service. Most of the time, in the room and at a fairly high price. There are relatively affordable internet cafes.
PHONE:
It should be noted that several hotels charge high rates even for local calls. Public telephones are then more affordable. It is better to get information before leaving about the terms of use for Las Vegas if you want to use your cell phone; an additional fee will usually apply.
POSTAL SERVICES
The surrounding area
Several expeditions are offered from Las Vegas. More often than not, you will be picked up directly at your hotel. It is easy to shop and book online for this type of activity. The majority also offer toll-free telephone numbers for more information on activities and a reservation service. Reservations are usually confirmed by e-mail (e-ticket).
